Two Women Go From GOP Red to Dem Blue For Primary
By MARGARET GIBBONS , Times Herald Staff

COURTHOUSE — Two well-known Montgomery County Republican women now are Democrats, at least temporarily.

Lita Indzel Cohen, the former state lawmaker from Lower Merion, and Karen Matthews, the wife of Republican County Commissioners’ Chairman James R. Matthews, late last month switched their party affiliations in order to be eligible to vote in the April 22 Democratic presidential primary election.

However, in separate telephone interviews Friday, both women said they are immediately returning to the GOP fold after casting their ballots. Matthews added that she filled out her card to re-register as a Republican at the same time she switched her registration to Democrat and plans to mail in the re-registration card April 23.

Although they will be voting for opposing Democratic presidential candidates, both women said their desire to vote in the Democratic primary was sparked by New York U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.

Read the rest of the story here. But, like I said, I ain't buying it. I heard through the grapevine that Lita Cohen had supported John Kerry in the last presidential election, and King James is one foot on a banana peel from becoming a democrat already, so why would either of these RINO's switch back anyway?

Bill,
People have the right to vote as they see fit and you need to respect that. However, no one is going to argue with you over the fact that Lita Cohen is and always will be a self serving idiot.

The reality is a LOT of people are switching their party affiliations because they do not feel the Republicans are showing them enough to support Republican platforms blindly.

Hopefully the message will be heard loud and clear by the GOP.

PA Watercooler made an interesting observation about Jim Matthews' wife registering as a Democrat:

“…you’d think that maybe becoming a Democrat might be a sensitive subject in their household… you know, with her husband throwing Republicans under the bus, and becoming a Democrat in all but name.”

I agree people have a right to vote as they see fit.

However, I do not agree that politicos and/or spouses who have benefited from the work of a political party have the right to do so without critical comment.

Lita Cohen spent ten years in the PA legislature on the strength of the Republican party choosing and electing her. For her time in Harrisburg her compensation, including pension and benefits is millions. Plural. Her benefits and pension continue until she dies. She supported Gore in 00, Kerry in 04 and now Hillary in 08. She has harmed countless Republicans over the years.

Jim Matthews (and by extension his spouse) will have twelve years on the taxpayer dime plus benefits as a result of hard work the Republican party has done for him and his candidacies. Over a million in compensation alone, not counting benefits.

While Jim desperately tries to market his Republican credentials while acting contrary to them on a daily basis, this is not helpful to his cause. I'm sure his wife is a nice person who doesn't deserve the attention. The irony of her reasoning, given her husbands similar lack of character, ethics, mores, loyalty, whatever you want to call it, is worth noting.

I'll gladly take her back. But Jim should go become a Democrat with the rest of his family since that's what he is.
