Vlahos Out, Kerns In

Jim Vlahos, in a classy move to promote Republican party unity, has withdrawn as a candidate for Republican Committee Chairman.

A letter will be mailed by Vlahos to all committee members tomorrow.

Tony Phyrillas has the full story here, and you can download the letter here.

Margaret Gibbons, of the Times Herald, reports on the great news here.

From Writemarsh to Mr. Vlahos:

Thank you! You've done more for party unity in one day than we've seen done in almost 4 years.

There's light at the end of the tunnel...finally!

B.

The stratgey was simple: paint Vlahos as a Matthews/Davis/Asher guy...and it worked. Vlahos had the sense to see he had no shot after that and did the right thing. Now Kerns has to unite the party long-term. It is united now against Matthews and thus for whomever Bruce Castor wanted for Chairman (Kerns from day one). The question is whether Kerns can use the momentum he has gathered to make the unification permanent. Bob Kerns will never be stronger than he is today. He has the first mandate in 6 years. He needs to use it at once and deal with Matthews firmly.

"Deal with Matthews firmly..." easier said than done. Much diplomacy went on trying to bring King James to his senses in December and January. That failed. Now His Majesty has dung himself into a huge hole and it is alomst impossible to see how his ego could let him climb out of it. Kerns has his work cut out for him, to be sure. If he can't bring Matthews back into the fold, Kerns has to effectively sever ties between the traitor and the GOP and maroon him as being a party of one or have him become the Democrat he once was joining his wife and brother.
